If you want to add some curb appeal to the front of your home, you don’t have to look much further than flower planters. Planters are a versatile and easy way to dress up the front of your home for a clean, polished look.
The best way to decorate your entryway with flower planters is with a multi-level approach.
1. Utilize the front lawn
Start by making use of your front lawn. This should be the first level of your three-level design. While most landscape design used to use 90 degree angles, we’re moving more toward bringing things away from the house. To do this, install a walkway to your front door that runs down the side of your driveway to the bottom of your lawn. Use small planters on either side in this first step.
2. Change your planter sizes with the changes in elevation
As you work your way up from your front lawn and move closer to your entryway, make use of any changes in elevation to determine when you change the size of your planters. As you move closer to your home, the planters should increase gradually in size. The biggest planters will be on either side of your front door or next to the pillars, depending on your home. This also works with steps, with smaller planter at the bottom and larger ones at the top. Planters are also useful in that they’re easier to maintain, so they won’t spill over into the walkway and make it look untidy.
3. Use plants for year-round colour
In Canada, and especially in Ontario, our changing seasons mean that different plants thrive during different times of the year. The flowers you use in your planters in the summer won’t look the same in the winter, so be sure to choose plants that have colour year-round. Employ the use of coniferous trees and grasses, and plant some flowers that will bloom in the spring.
Here are a couple of other things to consider when dressing up the entryway of your home:
- Stick with neutral colours for your planters so the flowers and plants are the main focus
- The bigger and grander your entryway, the bigger your planters should be at the top
- Make your front door pop with a bright paint colour
- Consider using motion-sensor lighting in your walkway and near your front door so your entryway looks great at all times of day
